Count Rudolf Lerchenau is a handsome young man, but his family fortune is all gone, and he works as a chauffeur, with only his faithful valet Franz to remind him of his family position. Nonetheless he manages to visit an expensive hotel restaurant and by chance meets a beautiful woman, Alice. They spend the evening together but she disappears suddenly, leaving him alone. Rudolf needs a new job and the prospective employer Frühwirt wants references, so Franz and Rudolf write them themselves. When Rudolf goes for the job interview, the new boss telephones to verify the references and Franz answers the phone and confirms everything. Rudolf gets the job, but Frühwirt phones to invite the "Count" to join him on a trip to his country house. Again Franz takes the call and recklessly agrees to go along as the Count. Rudolf drives, of course, and who else should join them on the trip but Alice, who is the niece of Frühwirt. So the car trip party is complex indeed, with a Count working as chauffeur, his valet pretending to be the Count, and the a society lady who has had a romantic evening with the Chauffeur when he was being the Count. At the house, Franz is happier in the servants' hall, and everyone seems to forget themselves, as Rudolf makes unsuccessful advances to Alice. But will the handsome but impoverished Count get the girl?
