In early 20th-century Austria, American salesman Virgil Smith arrives, hoping to sell a gramophone to Emperor Franz Joseph. After an awkward encounter, he meets Countess Johanna von Stolzenberg, and they fall in love, aided by their dogs' unlikely bond. However, the Emperor, wary of class differences, insists their relationship is doomed. Together, they must come through the Emperor's prejudice for their love to flourish.
