Fate reunites them as comrades on the way to the front, where their uneasy bond grows through absurd encounters with military life, from blustering officers to war’s grim realities. Stationed in Tigliano, they briefly enjoy calm—and the wiles of Costantina, a clever prostitute—before chaos returns. In a fierce battle between Italians and Austro-Hungarians, they’re separated from their unit and captured behind enemy lines.
