The Human Condition I: No Greater Love (1959)

In World War II-era Japan, Kaji, a conscientious objector, marries his sweetheart Michiko and accepts a labor supervision role in a Manchurian prison camp to avoid military service. As a labor chief, he attempts to improve the inhumane conditions for the Chinese prisoners, advocating for their welfare. However, his efforts put him at odds with the corrupt officials, cruel foremen, and the military police.
