In his first feature film, one of Brazil's greatest directors, the founder of Cinema Novo Glauber Rocha presents the story of Firmino, an educated man who returns to his fishing village to try to free the people from mysticism, in particular the Candomblé religion, which he considers a factor of political and social oppression, but everything has a tragic outcome.
