Murdoch Troon is a proud Scot working as a civil servant for an English town council. While somewhat earnest, he is also rather gormless in always believing he is in the right even when he's not. Never having learned to drive, he cycles everywhere, altercation after altercation in how he meets pompous motorist Charles Chingford. Murdoch however eventually wants to get on his good side in meeting his pretty daughter Claire, the two who have a mutual attraction. Knowing he has an uphill battle with Chingford, Murdoch enlists the help of acquaintance Freddie Fox, a ladies man and a shyster of a used car salesman, Freddie who too wants to ingratiate himself with Chingford as the owner of a lucrative car distributorship. With Claire enamored with cars and men who drive them, Freddie is able to oversell Murdoch on an early model slightly run down Bentley Roadster, and eventually becomes his instructor, both in driving and how to woo Claire. Murdoch enters into one bet after another with Chingford regarding being able to see and date Claire, the culmination of those bets being if Murdoch, who has become a menace behind the wheel in again not taking criticism well, can pass the driver's exam on his first attempt, something that rarely happens even with the best of drivers.
