Storyline:  In medieval Sweden, Töre and Märeta send their daughters, Karin and Ingerin, to carry candles to a distant church. On the way, the young women encounter a group of shepherds, and what seems like a harmless gathering turns into a tragedy when the men brutally rape and murder Karin. The killers unwittingly seek refuge in Karin's family home, and Töre, conflicted by his faith, plots revenge. The Virgin Spring is based on a Swedish ballad from the 13th century.
