Storyline:  From February 17 to March 3, 1860, within Edo Castle, a group of assassins waits by the Sakurada Gate to strike down the lord of the House of Ii, one of the most powerful men in the Tokugawa government, which has ruled Japan for three centuries. But suspicion festers in their ranks, falling on Niiro, an impoverished ronin yearning for samurai status, and Kurihara, an aristocratic samurai who befriends him. Niiro’s personal quest is to uncover the identity of his father, a high-ranking official who will only reveal himself if Niiro becomes a samurai. With American ships looming in Japan’s harbors, disillusionment among the conspirators, and change on the horizon, Niiro pursues an ambition that may vanish like smoke.
