Au hasard Balthazar (1966)

A young donkey named Balthazar begins his life as a beloved pet. However, as he grows older, he is forced into a life of hard labor, pulling carts and working on farms. Meanwhile, the girl who once cherished him grows up to face her own challenges, including a toxic relationship.
