Madame Émery and her 17-year-old daughter Geneviève run a small umbrella boutique in Cherbourg, Normandy. Geneviève is deeply in love with Guy, a mechanic who cares for his sickly aunt. Despite her mother's disapproval, who urges Geneviève to marry someone wealthier, the young couple plans to marry and consumate their love. But their lives are disrupted when Guy is drafted to fight in the Algerian War.
