Musume to watashi (1962)

This is the story of a Japanese husband and his French wife who becomes pregnant. They move from France to Yokohama, Japan only to suffer his inability to land a job. Fortunately, there are some savings and a few possessions that can be sold for money, but poverty looms nonetheless. By the time he has a job the couple's daughter is six-years-old and the mother is suffering illness necessitating the husband taking his wife back to France leaving their daughter behind. Six months pass and, with the wife not faring much better, the man has to travel back to Japan on his own to be with his daughter.
