The famous composer and conductor Hector Berlioz is visiting a small town in the Rome district to conduct one of his compositions. At the end of the concert he stops by the home of his young love Giulia. Not to tarnish his reputation as a great romantic he sends the entire orchestra ahead of him to play a symphony beneath the window of his beloved. This creates quite a stir in town and embarrasses the landlord, lawyer Ernesto, who is worried about his political future. Berlioz reassures him and convinces him that the neighbors will think that the concert is to pay homage to the political genius of the lawyer. Finally Berlioz succeeds in meeting Giulia. Forty years later: The former lovers re-meet, and Berlioz seems to have forgotten nothing. Giulia tries to keep her distance because she thinks that their destinies must go separate ways. Berlioz refuses to accept that, and in his passionate rapture grabs a burning poker with his bare hands. Touched, Giulia lovingly tends to his wound. This sincere gesture is enough to calm Berlioz' anguish. He leaves the house without Giulia - but with a new lust for life.
