A Hail of Bullets (1977)

None | Greece | Greek | 150 min
Directed by: Nikos Alevras
5.5

Peppered with ample doses of surrealism and absurdity, Nikos Alevras' avant-garde comedy sparked controversy on Saturday 28 April, 1984 when it aired on Greek TV. Cut off the air only moments after the film's release because of a scandalous scene, the movie caused public criticism, media frenzy, and debate about the director's improvisational filmic autobiography. In the attempt to depict his awkward relationship with women during various stages in his life, including his mother and wife, satiric vignettes unfold. These segments span years of fond memories and experiences. Rumoured to have caused the resignation of an entire Board of Directors, Nikos Alevras' "Hail of Bullets" also portrays the filmmaker's bitter, love/hate relationship with Greek cinema during political changeover in Greece.
