Instead of going to school, little Thomas strolls through the streets of Berlin. He discovers an apartment fire and immediately alerts the fire department, which saves two children. When a fireman thanks him and wants to write his name down, Thomas runs away - because he should actually be at school. The next day, his anonymous heroic deed appears in the newspaper and his running away is interpreted as modesty. The teacher talks to the children about it and Thomas has a conflict of conscience. He can't confess to the crime because he claims to have had a toothache for skipping school. The firefighters find him and want to thank him along with the rescuers. Thomas bravely admits to his lie.
