Seisaku's Wife (1965)

On the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, Okane escapes poverty by marrying a wealthy but brutal older man. After his death, she returns to her village, where she is scorned as a "witch." She falls for Seisaku, a model soldier, but when he is sent to war, she takes drastic measures to keep him home.
