The Long Way Home (1998)

After his wife's death, depressed Thomas Gerrin meets 21-year-old free spirit Leanne Bossert, and the unlikely pair hitchhike across the country. In learning to respect each other's differences, they become the best of mismatched friends and give each other the courage to embrace new beginnings and face the sad finales that greet them at their journey's end.
