A historical film based on the works of A. S. Pushkin "The Captain's Daughter" and "The Story of Pugachev". A young officer Grinev enters the service in a remote Belogorskaya fortress on the border of the Kyrgyz-Kaysak steppes. There he meets the daughter of the commandant of the fortress, Masha, as well as the ambitious and narcissistic officer Shvabrin. Seeing Grinev as an opponent in an attempt to win Masha, Shvabrin provokes a duel. At this time, the Pugachev uprising flares up. The Belogorskaya fortress was taken, and Masha's parents were killed. Shvabrin agrees to join Pugachev's service in order to save his life.
