Our usage of language allows us to distinguish between symptoms and inhibitions in describing pathological phenomena, but it does not attach much importance to this distinction. If we did not come across cases of illness which we must state show only inhibitions and no symptoms, and if we did not want to know what the conditions are for this, we would hardly be interested in distinguishing between the concepts of inhibition and symptom.
