Orphaned from his mother and raised by his father, a large landowner in the Landes region, Jean Peloueyre is about to turn twenty-three. For him, adolescence hasn't worked its usual miracle on his sad, puny body. At school, his classmates have nicknamed him "Landousquet". To prevent the Peloueyre fortune from falling into the hands of the Cazenave family (Jean's aunt Félicie and her son Fernand, a staunch anticlerical), the village priest urges Mr. Peloueyre to marry off his son as soon as possible. Jean knows he's ugly, so it's unbelievable that his father is planning to marry him off to one of the prettiest girls in the region, Noémie d'Artiailh. Even more unbelievably, the young girl and her parents seem flattered by the union. It's true that the d'Artiailhs, from a very old and respectable family, have suffered a number of reverses of fortune.
