Storyline:  Fifteen-year-old Astrid Magnussen lives in Los Angeles with her free-spirited artist mother, Ingrid. Their lives change drastically when Ingrid's affair with a writer named Barry ends in murder, as Ingrid poisons him with white oleander. Sentenced to life in prison, Ingrid leaves Astrid to endure a series of challenging foster homes, where she'll face betrayal, near-death experiences, and profound love, while maintaining contact with her imprisoned mother through letters.
