Octave has made the most of his father's absence to marry Hyacinthe, a penniless girl of unknown parentage. But Argante has now returned. Fearing a violent reaction on his part, Octave asks Scapin, cunning valet to his friend Léandre, to find some way of getting him to accept the marriage.
