George Harford, in line for the title of Lord Illingworth, betrays a young girl of a lower class whom his mother forbids him to marry. The girl goes away and works to raise her son, the child of Harford. Through some unexplained manner she gains an entrance into society and her son becomes a barrister. Through the influence of a friend, Mrs. Arbuthnot, as she now calls herself, secures a coveted position for her son. She is shocked when she learns that the man to whom he is to act as secretary is Harford, now Lord Illingworth. Eventually the boy learns that Illingworth is his father and will have nothing to do with him, while the mother is happy because her son's sweetheart is willing to overlook the mistake of the mother.
