The Viennese children's bookseller Felice Frank leads a modest but happy life with her ten-year-old daughter Lilli. Felice has heard nothing from Lilli's biological father, the Hamburg shipowner Alexander Helsing, since he fled before the child was born. So the surprise is great when one day the Hamburg lawyer Kurt Stockmann suddenly appears in Felice's shop and tells her that Alexander has died in a car accident. At first the young woman does not know how to react to this news. Another surprise awaits Felice and Lilli at the reading of the will in Hamburg: Alexander has inherited the majority of the shares in the Hamburg family shipping company Helsing from his little daughter. And until Lilli's 18th birthday, Felice is to manage the child's inheritance. Kurt Stockmann temporarily takes over the management of the company. The tradition-conscious entrepreneurs Helene and Jan Helsing, mother and brother of the dead man, are furious about this "last will": They make it clear to Felice that she and her daughter will never belong to the family. Jan in particular leaves no stone unturned to disgust Felice out of the company. But the perky Felice isn't so easily fooled. She moves to Hamburg with Lilli, where they initially live in the apartment of the charming Kurt Stockmann. When Kurt also falls victim to Jan's jealous lust for power, he has long since sided with the unloved partner Felice. Together they take up the fight against the scheming Jan. Of course, it doesn't take long before Kurt and Felice get closer privately in the heat of the moment. Using a sneaky trick, Jan finally succeeds in discrediting Felice throughout the shipping company. But just as she is about to clear the field, she receives a hot tip from her father's port night watchman Ottensen: Apparently Jan Helsing is involved in illegal toxic waste disposal. A race against time begins.
