Divorce lawyers Kenton 'Ken' Rhodes and Emily Bennett have a healthy but cynical mistrust of marriage from ample professional experience. They first meet and are attracted at the wedding of Ken's college buddy Lawrence 'Larry' and her sister Elisabeth 'Betsy' Showalter. They meet again in the divorce court where Ken's wealthy, retired client Martin Harper is expected to be cleaned out over a futile quarrel by her client, Margot 'Marge' Martin's former secretary, after 30 years of marriage and pointless 'mediation'.
