The Hamburg shipowner Jan Hansen proudly transfers a magnificent, brand new sailing yacht to Uruguay, which he lovingly designed in accordance with the wishes of the rich wood manufacturer Don Esteban Gonzales. But no sooner has the "Rheingold" docked in the port of Montevideo than things start to happen. To Jan's great surprise, his girlfriend and travel companion, the marine biologist Anne, rejects his marriage proposal. After the strenuous sailing trip lasting several weeks, she first needs some distance. While Anne is meeting up with her ex-colleague Tobias, who runs a marine biology institute in Montevideo, Don Esteban's seductively beautiful daughter Isabella casts her eye on Jan. There is a great deal of friction between the two, but the shipowner has completely different worries at the moment: before he yacht can be handed over to its new owner, the boat - in which Jan's entire capital is - has disappeared without a trace. Jan suspects Don Esteban's enemy neighbor, the cattle breeder Miguel Aranda, whose animals are being killed by a mysterious disease. Does Miguel want to save his endangered existence by selling the stolen yacht? Jan learns otherwise, because together with Anne he finds out that the honorable Don Esteban doesn't just deal in timber. The sailing yacht - which miraculously reappears - plays a key role in Don Esteban's sinister plans.
