Dak Diye Jai (1978)

Mahendra (Anup) is a postman in his native village staying with his wife Saral (Subrata). His newlywed foster sister's husband was to arrive, and a telegram comes. He assumes it is his arrival information and starts reading it, later realizing it was the news of his death in an accident. By then it was too late and bean was spilled. With self torture gnawing at his sister's attire, he takes a transfer elsewhere, the wife stays back. There he gets close to a child Mithu (Sanchita) and her mother Sunayani (Sumitra), whose husband is in Army. A similar telegram arrives, announcing his death in action. Mahendra hides the news and sends money from his salary on his behalf, starving himself as well as his wife. Much later the news is out, and due to the act, Mahendra is arrested. The president of the village had eyes on Sunayani and is bent on getting Mahendra convicted. Who could save him? Sunayani whom he had kept in dark? His wife? Why would they? Even if someone does, will he ever have the heart to go back to his job, where he considers himself to be a harbinger of bad-luck?
