In 1979, on the first day of a logging operation at Terania Creek, 300 people protested to stop the destruction of one of the last remnants of what was once called 'The Big Scrub' (the largest area of subtropical lowland forest in eastern Australia). The demonstrators initially assumed they would be home by evening, but they remained there for another month. This protest marked the first major environmental action in Australia and became a model for the rest of the world. Its impact is still felt today because what happened there changed the government's mindset and bureaucratic procedures and demonstrated that ordinary people can make a difference.
