Mahakavi Kalidas (1944)

Living the life of an upper-caste Brahman in a small village, naive and simple-minded Kali, falls in love with Pushpavali, a low-caste woman, much to chagrin of his widowed and abusive stepmother. When he persists with this romance, he is not only asked to leave the residence, but also the village along with Pushpavali. Both travel to another town and attempt to make a living. It is here that Pushpavali will be hired to sing in the palace of a learned but arrogant princess, and a Sage will entice Kali to enter into a competition with the princess - a move that will not only create problems between Pushpavali and him, but will also change his life forever.
