As a member of a subversive discussion circle, Fyodor Dostoevsky was sentenced to death. On the scaffold, the sentence was commuted to hard labor in Siberia. He wrote his great novels in St. Petersburg, Italy, and Germany. And in constant financial difficulties, because when he was overcome by a passion for gambling, he could lose everything - his wife's clothes, jewelry. He suffered from epilepsy. "Memoirs of a Dead House", "Crime and Punishment", "The Idiot", and "The Brothers Karamazov" tell about everything that Europe has learned to know more deeply only after Dostoevsky's death: the powers of the human subconscious, Hitler, Stalin and their loyal servants, terrorists, the eternal fascination with power and money; but also about spiritual poverty, mercy, and grace.
