Some young environmentalists have adopted a radical approach in their efforts to protect the Earth. These activists, living outside consumer society, have dedicated their lives to the preservation of nature, drawing inspiration from poets and philosophers like Henry David Thoreau. Their actions range from confronting poaching whaling ships in Antarctica and blocking trains transporting nuclear waste in Germany to carrying out arson attacks on forest construction machinery and sabotaging vivisection laboratories. These actions have forced some activists underground. Authorities strategically exploit their radicalism to label civil disobedience as criminal activity. Despite the fact that their actions are directed solely against property, not people, the FBI classifies them as terrorists. This modern-day witch-hunt, supported by legislation passed under industry lobby pressure (Patriot Act), empowers authorities to suppress any form of protest.
