In 1983, a landmark court case in Philadelphia allowed girls for the first time to attend America's last all-male public high school---the academically elite, 147 year old Central High School. The victory did not come without costs: from the first week when boys walked out in protest, to the threats and daily intimidation lavished on Central's first girl students. Central High School did not go easily into the sexual integration that was forced upon its ivy-covered tradition, and its richly honored past.
