Kirk Sorensen stumbles across Oak Ridge National Laboratory's research into the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor while researching means to power a lunar space colony for NASA. History of this design is recounted, including the politics (and the need for a weaponizable nuclear fuel) which killed it. Discussing energy alternatives, the capacity of solar/wind renewable is examined. Can society depend of intermittent power sources? It is even possible politically to move people to more expensive sources of energy? The Molten Salt Reactor offers us a choice between future of abundant clean energy, and a future in which we continue to wage wars over dwindling fossil fuel resources.
