Migrant workers tilling the crop fields in a small Tex-Mex border town discover the body of local crop duster, Bento Cruz. Fearing foul play and a possible curse on the entire village, they send for help from local police and federal agents. Because of her connections to the locals, Marisol Mendoza, a strong-willed, local US Marshal, is summoned to the scene to investigate. Recovering from a traumatic and accidental shooting of a pregnant desperado, Marisol still battles her demons with the bottle. Upon hearing of the murder, she throws herself into the case, attempting to regain her edge. Her superior, a retired US Marshal Chief known as "Big Sosa," has duplicitous connections to the case and, unbeknownst to her, is using her as a pawn for his illicit sex-trafficking business. While investigating the murder, Marisol finds a diary that details infidelity gone awry. The clues point to connections to the kidnappings of a number of local pregnant women, and dredge up Marisol's troubling past. With the help of her wet-behind-the-ears partner, Hennessy Gotshil, Marisol uncovers a plot by extremist cult leader Lucy Sands. Marisol pursues Sands to Mexico, racing against time to save the kidnapped women, their babies, and her town from these two conspiracies, threatening to destroy those most precious to her.
