It's the summer of 1964 and 13-year old Aaron Stanley and his family have recently moved to New Zealand after his Kiwi mom became homesick. Raised in the U.S., Aaron prefers to hang out with an expatriate American friend, Wicke, and they manage to avoid the local bullies. But when Wicke's family moves away, Aaron finds himself on his own. Aaron's father, a WWII vet with a stern demeanor towards his son, thinks the boy just needs to toughen up. One night Aaron witnesses an aerial battle between two UFOs over the woods near his home. Both ships crash and Aaron confronts the pilot of one of them, a shape-shifting alien named Lotse who claims to be a galactic peace officer. Lotse requests Aaron's help locating the other crashed pilot, a dangerous criminal he'd been pursuing. But when Aaron finds the wounded pilot of the second ship, Tyr claims he's the real cop. He was trying to arrest Lotse who's here as a scout for an invasion of Earth. Because both aliens have the power to appear as anyone at anytime - including Aaron's own mother and father - Aaron doesn't know who he can trust. He reluctantly teams up with some local Kiwi kids, including two bullies and the school misfits who are usually their victims. They're forced to work together to confront the real criminal alien and save the planet.
