The film tells the story of Donn, a 12-year-old boy who gets lost on the mighty Mount Katahdin during the summer of 1939. Inspired by true events and the bestseller of the same name, the Fendler family begins an ascent of the mountain. Due to a storm threat the father decides to turn back, allowing Donn and his brother, Ryan, to continue alone to the summit. In the midst of a severe thunderstorm, Donn becomes lost in the vast Maine wilderness, and his brother returns for help. His family desperately searches for him, as Donn struggles to survive, clinging to his father's mantra: “Keep going.”
