Two fathers and three boys were sailing from San Francisco to Portland in their boat, Fat Chance. Thirty-five miles off the coast of Point Reyes, they were hit by a rogue wave and one of the boys was killed. By chance, Finley came upon Fat Chance grounded on the beach and filmed it as a salvage boat appeared, tethered the boat and towed it back out to sea. Five years later after showing the crew the footage, she interviewed one of the fathers. The story of Fat Chance is interwoven with facts about rogue waves and the father's testimony of the power of documentary footage to move the experience of the tragedy into the acceptance of chance and forces beyond control.
