Inspired by the true story of the adventurous aviatrix Elly Beinhorn who, in the male-ruled domain of aviation, circumnavigated the world solo in 1932, flew over three continents in 24 hours and was one of the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic. Braving the elements in an open-cockpit single-engine plane, crossing continents and oceans, deserts and mountains - for Elly Beinhorn, this is the only way to live. One of the leading women pilots of her time, she confidently breaks through the glass wall surrounding the male-ruled domain of aviation. Drawn together by their mutual love of speed, Elly and race-car driver Bernd Rosemeyer - the fastest man in the world - meet and fall in love. Their marriage and the birth of their son become front-page news followed by millions. Danger accompanies her in the air much of the time, in the form of electrical storms and mechanical problems, but even a crash landing in the Sahara cannot prevent her from breaking new records. While the Nazi regime is happy to use the couple for its propaganda, Elly soon uses her own fame to defy the regime. The death of her husband in a horrifying crash deeply shocks Elly, who now finds solace only in her child - and in her passion for flying.
