1919 - On a rainy night in the Polish countryside, the monks of Sagasti Monastery discover a four year old boy abandoned at their front gate. The child suffers from a grotesque birthmark that disfigures much of his skin - yet, inexplicably, this 'stain' is tied to his "talent" to solidify and animate shadows. The monks, led by Brother Voss, are divided if this a blessing or a curse? They adopt the child, name him Ivan, and tutor him how to govern his ability before he hurts himself or others. 1939 - Brother Ivan, now nicknamed "Saint Stain" by the townsfolk, has his shadow-talent under control. He lives a peaceful, egalitarian existence alongside the monks who tend the sick and infirm in a makeshift hospital on the monastery grounds. The lovely nurse, Liliana, is fond of shy Ivan, yet the handsome Brother Gregor, also has eyes for her heart. As the Third Reich invades Poland, the wounded rebels of the local resistance as well as the innocent victims of the Nazi occupation, take refuge at the Monastery. Brother Ivan and a scant few doctors tend the overflow of injured. Yet when nihilistic Sgt. Kehrmann, recently demoted from Himmler's Vril Society, occupies the monastery as a base to hinder the approaching Allied Forces and orders all patients, monks, and doctors inside exterminated, Ivan must choose between keeping his vow of peace or embrace the shadows that dwell within his stained soul to save those he loves.
