After centuries of persecution, the Catholic Church in England saw a unexpected revival in the nineteenth century. When the English hierarchy was restored in 1850, the famous convert John Henry Newman (now a Blessed) inspired the assembled new bishops with his moving sermon, 'The Second Spring'. In this program, actor Michael Wade performs this famous address which hails the re-growth of the Church. Dr Andrew Nash, visiting Oscott College seminary where sermon was delivered, gives the historical background. 'The Second Spring' gives a message of hope about how the Church renews herself after the darkest of times.
