The Mason's are a family of four, living in the pristine country - side, in a lovely log house amongst expanding fields and forest. Nora, the daughter, is an energetic and lovely eleven-year-old girl with a love of singing. Her biggest dream is to one day travel through the cosmos. Nora's best friend and older brother Robert, is a particularly pedantic young boy who has an affinity for magic tricks. On their way home from the recital Nora loses her brother in a tragic car accident, caused by their neighbor Edmund. The emotional trauma from this shocking event results in Nora being unable to speak and leaves her effectively mute. After losing the ability to communicate with her parents and the outside world, a benevolent alien, who has teleported to Earth and transforms into a boy before Nora's eyes, becomes her savior.
