Set in a psychiatrist's office, 'In Session' explores the psychological trauma that accompanies SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, in dramatic fashion. The story explores the relationship between Corby Engel, the patient, and her doctor, Dr. Calloway, a sympathetic doctor who probes the trauma Corby tries so desperately to hide in the setting of a therapy session. What is revealed is a deep fear underlying the fact that Corby has recently found that she is pregnant and all the feelings that is unearthing due to her earlier brush with SIDS. During the session, it takes all of Dr. Calloway's skill to cajole, coax and persuade Corby to divulge her secrets: first that she is, in fact, pregnant and second, that she had a prior pregnancy that resulted in a baby who died from SIDS. In the course of the story it also becomes clear that emotional trauma is best dealt with by bringing it out into the light, exposing it, dealing with it and, hopefully, healing from that process, rather than hiding it and pushing it away, hoping it will dissipate. Often the fear of confrontation is bigger than the thing we must confront.
