Shattering Refuge explores the role of the media in re-framing the act of seeking refuge from a basic human right to a criminalized activity. By weaving the unscripted, spontaneous voices of displaced people, journalists, politicians and NGO workers into one powerful narrative, Shattering Refuge explores whether the media is an instigator, innocent observer, or accomplice, in the representations of displaced people. Shot on three continents, the film challenges audiences to consider the boundaries imposed upon their own perspectives by this coverage. Through heart-rending footage and surprising reveals, Shattering Refuge imagines the way forward, in a world where the very idea of refuge has been shattered and complacency is no longer an option.
