Alexis Karl's upbringing in a cemetery, where her parents worked, inspired a life -long interest in both gothic and fantasy genres within all of her works. Her films, music and art reflect a dark undercurrent, one that delves into the realm of fantastic realism and an exploration of the human psyche. Karl is a filmmaker, composer-singer, multidisciplinary artist, perfumer, professor and lecturer. Her multidisciplinary installations, self- composed music through her LEX project and art films have been exhibited, screened and performed both nationally and internationally in Rome, Italy, New York City and Manchester, England, with most notable performances at The Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and The Ritz and Sacred Trinity in Manchester, UK. Karl has exhibited her films with Stephen Romano Gallery, Scope Art Fair, Living Gallery Outpost, White Box Gallery, and The Morbid Anatomy Museum in New York City, as well as The Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington DC, and Aqualis Gallery in Rome, Italy. Her short film, The LEX Requiem co-directed with Bruno Palma, is a 2018 official selection of the Arte Film Festival in Italy, Finalist in the Europa Film Festival in Barcelona and Official Selection in Katra Film Festival in NYC. Her shorts, The Persistence of Ritual and Exorcism Jouissance , were official selections and finalists in the Mobile 9 Film Festival and 60 Second Film Horror Festival. Karl's fashion films include a suite of films for NYC designer, Mimi So, and upcoming films for Rome designer, Livia Risi. Karl's work has been featured in The New York Times: Women in The World, Atlas Obscura, Bustle Magazine, Ephemera Magazine, Disinfo Magazine, The NY Post, London Times, Art News, ARCO Japan, Elle Magazine, Allure Magazine, Lucky Magazine, Time Out New York, The View, NBC and CNN. Karl has performed her musical compositions live on Salford City Radio, UK and WMBR Radio, Boston. She is a Joan Mitchell Grant recipient, and a finalist in the Art and Olfaction Awards.
