Payal Kapadia is a Mumbai-based filmmaker and artist. She studied economics at St. Xavier's College, film direction at the Film & Television Institute of India, and pursued a master's degree at Sophia College. Her work is characterized by what is not easily visible, often hidden within the folds of memory and dreams. It explores minor, ephemeral feminine gestures in search of the truths that inform her practice. Her short films, "Afternoon Clouds" (2017) and "And What Is the Summer Saying" (2018), premiered at the Cinefondation Cannes Film Festival and the Berlinale, respectively. Her debut feature, "A Night of Knowing Nothing," was selected for the Quinzaine des Cinéastes at Cannes in 2021 and her second feature, "All We Imagine as Light" (2024), was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
