In 1943, Zhang Ying studied at the "Chuesheng Girls' Middle School" in Beijing, and was admitted to the "Siyi Drama Club" and participated in the drama performances such as "Home". In 1944, she worked as an announcer in the Third Office of the Political Department of the Military Commission of the Chongqing Kuomintang Government. In 1948, she entered the "Northwest Film Company" for the first time on the screen and played the main roles. In 1953, she entered the Shanghai Film Studio. Because her personal image and temperament were far from the image of "workers, peasants and soldiers" required by the ideology of CCP government, she only played a few supporting role in a handful of films. From 1950, Wei Li and Zhang Ying gradually began to fall in love through film shooting and then married. In the early 1980s, when she meets the right role, she will have a "play addiction". She has successively appeared in TV dramas such as "The Eyes Are Glad" aka "Xi shang mei shao" (1982), and has served as producer of these TV dramas. She successfully participated in the planning of the filming of Today I Leave (1997) which is the sequel Today, I Rest (1959) .
