Kara Walker

Kara Elizabeth Walker is an American contemporary painter, print-maker, installation artist, filmmaker, and professor whose work explores race, gender, sexuality, violence, and identity. She has gained national and international recognition for her cut-paper silhouettes, a technique first used in the 16th century and further developed in the 18th century, depicting historical narratives haunted by sexuality, violence, and subjugation. In 2014, Walker produced her first site-specific sculpture, A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, which was installed in a warehouse in a former Domino Sugar compound in Brooklyn.
