Justin Maurer

Justin Maurer is a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult) and an American Sign Language interpreter based in Los Angeles. He is honored to serve the Deaf Community. He works full time as an ASL interpreter and is also a consultant on a Deaf-led ASL consulting team. He has been an ASL Interpreter for over a decade. In the Greater Los Angeles area he frequently interprets for film and TV, high profile events, award ceremonies, political speeches, television appearances, interviews, and more. He has interpreted for the 2021 Emmy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Entertainment Tonight, Shark Tank, and the Media Access Awards. In October 2021 he interpreted for John Waters as he hosted the Halloween Meltdown music festival in Oakland, California. During awards season 2022 he interpreted for Troy Kotsur during his historic run of Best Supporting Actor wins from the SAG Awards, to the BAFTA Awards, to the Academy Awards. As a CODA himself, it was very meaningful to have been a part of CODA's successful awards season run leading up to winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards. He has also interpreted for many musical performances including Stray Kids, Ozomatli, Aloe Blacc, Tom Morello, Alice Bag, The Avengers, Egyptian Lover, No Small Children, Quinto Sol and The Linda Lindas. He had the honor of interpreting for former First Lady Michelle Obama, Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and UTLA, the Los Angeles Teachers Union during their historic strike of 2019. His ASL interpreting and consultation experience includes entertainment industry stalwarts NBC/Universal, ABC, Fox, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Lionsgate, Disney, Marvel, Dreamworks, Apple, Netflix, Writers Guild of America West (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA), and Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA). As an advocate for the Deaf community he always employs Deaf team members when he is hired as an ASL Consultant for scripts, films, or television. He recently conducted five seminars of Deaf Awareness training with his Deaf business partner. CODAs and Deaf partners make for a great team. As an advocate for the Deaf Community, he strongly encourages all ASL Directors/ASL Consultants/ASL Masters, ASL interpreters, and CODAs to include Deaf community members as a part of their consulting teams. His educational interpreting experience includes USC, UCLA, Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach, Long Beach Community College, El Camino College, LA Trade Tech, and LAUSD. His medical interpreting experience includes Cedar Sinai Hospital, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, USC School of Dentistry, and UCLA Medical Center. Led by a BIPOC interpreting team, he was a volunteer interpreter for BLM LA and associated groups in 2020. His autobiographical comedy "Falling On Deaf Eyes" about the struggles of a teenage punk and his single Deaf mother in a small town had its world premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June 2019. Justin was born in L.A. but came of age in the Great Pacific Northwest where he recorded three albums and embarked on world tours with his storied punk band Clorox Girls. After a decade of nonstop touring, the band fell apart and he worked and lived in Madrid and London. In Europe he toured with Red Dons, sang for Mano De Mono, formed the band Suspect Parts and worked as an English teacher, DJ, tour manager and bartender before a full-circle return to Los Angeles. Justin's first chapbook "Don't Take Your Life" was published in 2006. His second chapbook of stories "Seventeen Television" was published in 2013. His third chapbook of stories "Clorox Boy" was published in 2016 and his fourth "Mutant Maniac" in 2018. Before becoming a professional ASL interpreter, he has worked as a traveling dental supply salesman, Lyft driver, Thai food delivery boy, and Hollywood tour bus driver as well as a freelance writer and contributor to various publications. With his cousin Tim Maurer, he wrote his first feature screenplay "Pulling Teeth" about their mutual experience working for the family dental supply business. He sang for the punk/60s pop band L.A. Drugz and played guitar in punk/pop band Maniac. He plays in European apocalypse pop group Suspect Parts . He sometimes reunites with Clorox Girls. One of his songs,"Outside Place," was featured in the independent film, "The Lifeguard" (2013) starring Kristin Bell. Another song, "All The Time" was featured on the Showtime's "Shameless." His song "Seventeen Television" was used as the entrance theme song for WWE Wrestler CJ Parker. His music and writing has been featured on podcasts and radio shows such as Mike Watt's "The Watt From Pedro Show," Life During Wartime (KBOO), Cherry Blossom Clinic (WFMU), Champagne Problems (KDVS), Gorsky Press podcast (LA), Bam! Radio Show (Italy) and Skid Row Studios (LA). Maurer's writing and criticism has appeared in The Rumpus, Vice Spain, Faster Times, Dum Dum Magazine, Trop, L.A. Record, Color Magazine, Maximumrocknroll, Razorcake, Vol 1. Brooklyn and more. His country western band THE WAYWARD CHAPEL released a live album on Spotify, his Euro super group SUSPECT PARTS recently released their debut album, LA punk band MANIAC released their latest album in 2019. In 2020 he released a solo power pop EP under the moniker JENNY and 2021 he released another EP "Trajinero b/w Kids Of Today"
