Danijel Varga

Danijel Varga began his journey on this earth in 1954, born on the seventh day of October in Bjelovar Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia). At 9 he was playing guitar, mandolin and clarinet then 2 years later began singing as well. Demonstrating musical talent at an early age, as a teenager, Danijel also became interested in acting. In 1970, he joined the Young People's Theatre in the capital city of Zagreb. This was a chance for Danijel to get away from ordinary life and become someone else for a while. It didn't hurt either that a couple young ladies, who frequented the stage, dragged this shy fellow up front and center for an audition. By Christmas he was in his first production. Stage experience landed Danijel some roles on TV in his country which he continued until late 1980. His journey then brought the performer to Canada where he continued acting and eventually founded a Yugoslavian theater in Toronto. Steadily improving his English speaking abilities, he eventually branched out and formed the International Drama Ensemble with is then wife Erika Varga, an actress, writer, poet and singer. Here the tables turned for a while as he was participated more backstage then on stage, successfully directing more than 30 plays. It was until later in life when Danijel was encouraged to pursue singing professionally. Someone wanted him to sing in a particular production and he gave it a try. During a rehearsal, his untrained but powerful vocals caught the attention of the voice coach who pulled him aside and suggested he seriously consider opera. From there Danijel traveled around Europe receiving invitations from various organizations and gaining experience along the way. Though he do not join an opera company full time, he had the privilege of performing in some famous operas. Along the way, Danijel began performing for very appreciative audiences in small concert halls and discovered that he also enjoyed the intimate setting of senior citizen centers. What began as means to afford his self-described wayfaring lifestyle, turned into a unique niche for folks who can no longer travel to hear live entertain. Danijel continues to receive invitations to perform in shows primarily on the East Coast, having recently performed in New York city. Still in the gypsy spirit, he gladly travels across the states singing for audiences large and small, in lounges, restaurants, piano bars, hotels, community centers and most frequently in senior citizen homes.
