Stanley F. Cherrie was born on May 11, 1942 in the Bronx, New York. His family later moved to Mauricetown, New Jersey and he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at Rutgers University in 1964 and was a Distinguished Military Graduate. He was commissioned a second lieutenant of Armor upon graduation from Rutgers. A month into his second tour of Vietnam in 1971, he stepped on a land mine that blew apart his right leg, right hand and part of his left heel. However, he continued to stay in the Army. A whirlwind military career saw him rise from second lieutenant to brigadier general. Cherrie had two assignments in Vietnam during the war years, as well as tours in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He also earned a long list of awards and decorations. His awards and decorations include: the Distinguished Service medal, the Silver Star, Distinguished Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (five Oak Leaf Clusters), Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal (50 Awards), Air Medal with "V" Device, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, NATO Medal, Parachute Badge, and Army Aviator Badge. Cherrie retired from the U.S. Army in April 1998 after nearly 34 years of service to his country. Afterwards, he became vice president of business synchronization for Cubic Applications, Inc. in Leavenworth, Kansas. Cherrie was married to the former Mary Ellen Chester of Millville, New Jersey. They have three grown children: Bryan, Victoria.
