Born Robert Melik Hovsepian in Tehran on May 6th 1983, he fled Iran with his family while still an infant and grew up in France where he has lived ever since. The son of a stage director and a theatre actress, he has wanted to direct movies since he was 10 years old and studied cinema in high school and college, earning a bachelor's degree at the University of Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle in 2006. He started as a screenwriter and an actor before directing his first short in 2014.
